Full Itinerary
On this fantastic private Michelangelo tour you’ll discover the man behind the name. With an experienced and passionate local guide, you’ll really get to know Michelangelo Buonarroti, the great sculptor, painter, architect and poet, and explore the city where he grew up, including the places that inspired his many masterpieces.
A tour through the ancient cobbled streets of the Renaissance city with a knowledgeable guide will reveal just how influential the artist was to the history and heritage of its art. The character and infinite talent of the great man will be brought to life as you wander the streets and see the Buonarroti house, his childhood home, discover where he studied his art, and see a host of his most famous works. You’ll visit many important places in the city that are connected to his art, from his very early works to the site where he is buried.
Our private Michelangelo tour takes you inside the Bargello, Florence’s National Museum, home to an impressive collection of Mannerist and Renaissance works. You will see four very important sculptures by the artist: Brutus, Bacchus, David-Apollo and the stunning Tondo Pitti. Through their extensive art knowledge, your guide will help you draw comparisons and relate to other works in the museum from Verrocchio as well as the bronze sculptures of Donatello.
Even as you wander from one museum to the next, your guide will point out places of interest in the city relating to this revered artist.
The next stop on the tour is the Opera del Duomo museum, where you will go inside to view the Palestrina Pietà - one of his final works. It’s impossible not to be moved by the knowledge that Michelangelo sculpted this piece for his own tomb and it emotively reflects the struggles and personal torment he endured in later life.
Next on this wonderful tour you’ll visit the New Sacristy of the Medici Chapels. It is here you’ll discover the incredibly beautiful tombs of members of this famous Florentine family, and learn just how important their influence was on Michelangelo’s life and art.
The final stop on the itinerary is the renowned Accademia Museum, where you will stand and gaze with awe upon one of the world’s most iconic sculptures - the Statue of David. Your guide will relate the history behind the sculpture and you’ll also move on to view the unfinished work ‘Prisoners’, which was commissioned for the tomb of Pope Julius II. There is more to see in this wonderful museum so, although this is where the tour finishes, you’ll be free to stay on and explore at your leisure.
