Who was the great Michelangelo Buonarroti, sculptor, painter, architect and poet? On this dedicated Michelangelo tour, you’ll follow in the footsteps of the genius and discover the city where he grew up and created his many masterpieces.
As you wander the charming cobbled streets of this incredible Renaissance city with our expert guide, you will discover what part the artist played in making Florence such a unique place for its art. You will hear about where he was born, his family, see his childhood home, learn about what and where he studied and see his many masterpieces. His rivalries and character will be brought to life through fun facts, anecdotes and interesting stories as you get to know the real man.
On this Michelangelo tour you will learn about the important places connected with his art, from his earliest works in the Buonarroti house, to the place where he is buried.
We will visit the inside of Florence’s National Museum, the Bargello. The Bargello houses an impressionable collection of Renaissance and Mannerist masterpieces. We will see four important sculptures by Michelangelo: Bacchus, Brutus, David-Apollo and the beautiful Tondo Pitti, which is an example of the famous “non finito”. You will also be able to draw important comparisons with other works in the museum, including Verrocchio and Donatello’s bronze sculptures of David.
As we walk from museum to museum on the Michelangelo tour you will pass places of interest connected to this iconic artist.
Our next visit will be inside the Opera del Duomo museum to see one of his last works, the Palestrina Pietà - a work that is impossible to see in real life and not be touched and moved. Michelangelo sculpted this Pietà for his very own tomb and the piece reflects the torment and struggle he faced in later life.
No Michelangelo tour in Florence would be complete without visiting the New Sacristy in the Medici Chapels, where the beauty of the tombs of some members of the Medici family will overwhelm you. Throughout this experience you will learn how the Medici family had an enormous impact on the artist and his works.
The final visit will be to the world famous Accademia Museum to see one of the most famous sculptures in the world - Michelangelo’s David. Time will be dedicated to understanding this sculpture as well as seeing another of his works, ‘Prisoners’, which was commissioned for Pope Julius II’s tomb but unfinished. The tour will end here so those who wish can continue to explore this important museum.
